Best Oscar Nomination Surprises:
Michael Clayton wasn't expected to garner more than one or two nominations, so it's a treat to see this superbly acted film playing with the big boys. The movie not only landed a spot in the Best Picture category, but Tony Gilroy added to his nomination for Best Original Screenplay with a surprise nod in the Best Director race. Meanwhile, Tom Wilkinson nabbed a Supporting Actor nod for his astonishing turn as an attorney on the brink of madness, while George Clooney deservedly made the Best Actor cut by reminding us that his acting repertoire includes more than just smirking charm.
