In the good old days, Hollywood presented a Darwinian approach to romantic films. The strong guys kicked sand in the face of the geeks before getting all the girls. End of story.
Then the geeks grew up and became screenwriters and directors and producers and all that changed. A more enlightened, less superficial era was ushered in. Hotness was reviled (unless you were a woman) and dorkiness in all of its awkward, kinky haired, doughiness was revered (unless you were a woman). Film’s new leading men reflected this move away from shallowness, while the women stayed as pretty and young as God always meant for them to be.
