Antony and the Johnsons
The Crying Light
However regal the strings, however haunting the album artwork, the focal point of Antony Hegarty’s music will always be that voice -- a quivering force of nature piped in from another dimension. Nothing else matters upon first listen to The Crying Light, but repeated visits cast a wider eye onto the changes in Antony’s world. The pleas for gender-blending transcendence that characterized 2005’s I Am a Bird Now are muted, making the questing sentiments more global, if less life-or-death urgent. Then there are unprecedented glimpses of the pop star Antony could be in a less homogeneous marketplace: the downright jaunty “Kiss My Name,” the heavenly soul of “Aeon” (featuring atypically gritty electric guitar). Of course, he’s got something far more enduring than pop stardom – he’s got that voice.
