Biggest Upset
In an even bigger WTF? moment than Cuba Gooding Jr. introducing Amy Winehouse, jazz musician Herbie Hancock won Album of the Year. Even Hancock couldn’t believe it. As he said, in the Grammys’ 50-year history, only one other jazz instrumentalist has even been nominated for the honour. Beating out Amy Winehouse, Kanye West, Vince Gill and the Foo Fighters, Hancock thanked the Canadian artist who inspired his winning disc, River: The Joni Letters. “Joni Mitchell, Joni Mitchell, Joni Mitchell: thank you so much,” he said, before dropping his acceptance speech.
