Worst Act to Follow

The VMAs opening number -- a tribute to Michael Jackson -- was a mega spectacle, featuring a medley of hits and two of the biggest superstars ever: Madonna and Janet Jackson. Madonna's opening speech had some charming moments, particularly her admission that her two young sons are huge Michael Jackson fans. ("There's a whole lot of crotch-grabbing and moonwalking in my house.") As for Janet, she didn't have anything to say, but damn did she dance. Revisiting her and Michael's hit "Scream," she busted her way through a mirror to make her entrance, and the intensity of her performance felt like she was about to punch her way through the TV screen.
